The Development Editor is responsible for developing exceptional quality content that helps educators strengthen classroom practice and addresses major learning goals for students. He or she will develop the content of major print and digital learning products for the higher education market by having a strong background in development editing and an understanding for instructor and student needs in the higher education market. This position requires a thorough understanding and creative approach to instructional design for the higher education market, experience line-editing, migrating and developing print/digital content, excellent project management skills, and the ability to partner closely with cross functional colleagues, including authors.
- Manage development of key print and digital products and texts: prepare preliminary assessments of content, analyze competing works, analyze and summarize content reviews, provide authors and developers with direction on the writing and organization of content, edit content, develop illustration programs, oversee preparation of content for production.
- Curate legacy content to identify which assets/ content should be migrated versus those pieces that should be left behind.
- Understand and interpret learning and instructional designs and provide guidance for the development team in executing such plans. Follow instructional design methodologies and use best practices in the development of all projects.
- Manage and interpret the needed elements of graphic design, video storyboarding, scriptwriting, and image content.
- Design content to support a variety of delivery types, including but not limited to print books, e-Learning, classroom, and virtual classroom. Create and execute methods for measuring the learning effectiveness of content. Conduct market research in established and new college markets in consultation with acquisition editors.
- Partner, collaborate, and communicate with acquisition editors, development editors and other functional colleagues, authors, and customers.
- Create and manage projects that meet schedules and budgets, at the highest quality.
- As a member of the group, assist in training and advising other team members and contributing to the continuing evolution of best practices regarding development processes and methods.
- The position involves occasional travel to campuses, author meetings, sales conferences, and academic conventions.
- University degree
- Three to five years of progressive experience in development editing for higher education textbooks/media products required.
- Previous experience in higher education markets.
- Proven ability to interpret learning designs for digital products and translate them into actionable, content-related development plans.
- Expertise in digital content and products.
- Superior oral and written communication skills; experience in drafting clear and comprehensive guidelines.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and activities; use resources effectively and efficiently; create process to manage workflow.
- Familiarity with Content Management Systems.
- Experience with graphic design, video storyboarding and scriptwriting, image manipulation, and formatting.
- A degree or completed coursework in instructional design and knowledge of accessibility guidelines.
- Strong collaborator who can extend one’s own authority and influence others with authority.
- Action/results oriented--focused on the outcome of personal or team work; leads self and others to results.
