Branching Out: How Trees are a Part of Our World

by Joan Marie Galat; Wendy Ding (illus.)

In her latest title for young readers, Edmonton author Joan Marie Galat creates non-fiction for children that demonstrates her passion for the subject matter as well as an understanding of what kids are interested in and how they process and utilize the information being shared. With her thorough and balanced presentation of facts, Galat’s engaging book can be used as a springboard to encourage kids to research related topics.

Branching Out (Joan Marie Galat)After a brief yet thorough introduction, including a description of the parts of a tree and a discussion of environmental concerns such as global warming, Galat tightens her focus to consider 11 specific varieties of tree, from the baobab to the Scotch pine.

Galat notes varietals, lifespan, and related products. Fun tidbits are also included, such as the fact that while the maple leaf has only been on the Canadian flag since 1965, it may have been used as an unofficial national symbol since the 1700s. Graphics and photo captions relay other details, including common and Latin names, leaf silhouette, native growing locations, appearance, and average height. Sociology, biology, and horticulture are touched on in the discussion of ways various types of trees are used by people around the world, their function as animal habitats, and environmental issues. The book closes with advice on what readers can do to help fight the effects of deforestation.

With an accessible format that allows readers to delve into the material at their own pace and a lovely combination of crisp photography and Wendy Ding’s illustrations, Branching Out is a beautiful and informative book that will find a welcome home on classroom shelves.
