E. B. Cox: A Life in Sculpture

by E. B. Cox

Toronto artist E. B. Cox has been working in the nearly forgotten medium of stone sculpture for more than five decades. The solitariness of his occupation has never steered him away from chiselling giant chunks of limestone into larger-than-life sculptures of torsos, grouped figures, or wild animals like bears and fawn. E. B. Cox: A Life in Sculpture ($35 cloth 1-55046-304-7, 107 pp., colour/b&w photos, Boston Mills Press) – with a short but insightful introduction by art writer Gary Michael Dault, – spans most of the 84-year-old artist’s career, featuring beautifully photographed images of his work. Cox’s forms are so full and rounded that they appear inflated, reminiscent of Henry Moore’s style, though Cox adds in more details such as eyelids and fingers.
