Face Painting

by Patricia Silver, Louise Phillips, illus.

Centuries of tradition lie behind the popularity of face-painting today, but this new title makes it easy for beginners to learn basic techniques and patterns. As the lead performer of the Sphere Clown Band, author Patricia Silver shares her expertise with step-by-step instructions and creative advice.

Silver’s guidance is clear enough so that children can use this book on their own, yet her designs and patterns create a polished professional effect. After a brief introduction, she discusses necessary materials and equipment, safety points, directions on how to test for allergies to the paint, reminders to protect clothing and how to do a proper clean-up. The patterns (16 in all) are divided into four groups – clowns, animals, Halloween faces, and special characters. Each pattern has a double-page spread with a colour photograph of the finished face and a section outlining the required materials and equipment. Clear, simple instructions on how to achieve the final effect are in the form of numbered diagrams that illustrate the position and application of the prescribed colours and shapes. For each pattern the author suggests easy costume pieces to complement the painted character.

Overall this book is well designed and approachable. The pages are colourful but not overcrowded with either image or text. Photos and diagrams reflect a multicultural diversity of faces, and the author’s suggestions for additional activities to encourage individual creativity are commendable. Concluding sections on easy designs to learn and more face-painting fun complete this useful volume on a popular subject.
