Franklin’s Bad Day

by Paulette Bourgeois, Brenda Clark, illus.

Franklin’s Bad Day is the 15th title in this successful series from Kids Can. The “Franklin” series shows no signs of running out of steam, and Bourgeois and Clark continue to produce solid stories with attractive illustrations. This time out, Franklin is having a bad day. At first we don’t know why he is in such a bad mood, and the reader may suspect Franklin is just having one of “those” days. Eventually, however, the reason for his bad mood is revealed when Bear suggests they ask Otter to play with them, and Franklin reminds Bear that Otter has moved away. Franklin’s day goes from bad to “worstest,” until his father helps him to deal with his feelings by writing a letter to Otter. Although the way in which the author reveals Franklin’s real problem may be a little subtle for some young readers, most will enjoy this story. Clark’s illustrations are up to her usual high standards, and she does an excellent job of conveying emotion in the faces of her animal characters. As with all titles in this series, Franklin’s Bad Day features an attractive cover, which will be sure to grab the attention of browsers in stores and libraries.
