I Can Make Art

by Mary Wallace

The prepared librarian should never be without two types of books when the primary crowd comes to borrow: dinosaur books and arts and crafts collections. Although dinosaur books are usually accessible, hands-on craft books sometimes give more cause for concern. The directions provided often challenge all but the most artistically inclined adults, and materials required may call for an expensive visit to a craft shop. The fun of spontaneous creation may be lost.

Mary Wallace’s I Can Make series is designed to keep both parents and kids sane and fiscally solvent. Whether the focus is puppets, toys, or nature crafts, instructions are given in easy-to-follow steps. Wallace’s photographs are vivid and precise, showing how interesting products can be made from household items.

I Can Make Art, the eighth in the series, is likely to be every bit as popular as the earlier works. What is particularly noteworthy about this book is its way of linking a delightful activity to an existing art tradition. The 14 art ideas outlined are far more than random mucking about. Suncatchers borrow from stained glass art, T-shirt painting uses pointillist technique, a still life picture incorporates the basics of the colour wheel. Art history or theory, highlighted in purple, give just enough simple detail to spark interest. Directions for displaying art introduce the possibility of visiting a public art gallery.

Children in the earliest grades who enjoy creating will find many productive hours here, and parents who wish to become involved are not likely to become frustrated. Teachers of primary programs (particularly those whose art background didn’t progress much beyond stick figures) will also find comfort and inspiration from this book. Librarians should be forewarned: I Can Make Art will be difficult to keep on the shelf!
