It’s a Feudal, Feudal World: A Different Medieval History

by Stephen Shapiro; Ross Kinnaird, illus.

The latest offering from historian and author Stephen Shapiro lives up to its claim to be a “different” history in both its infographic presentation and the scope of material covered.

Infographics are a method of imparting information in a quick, easily accessible, visually appealing format. Long a staple in magazines and online, their use has become increasingly popular in books as well.

Shapiro has done an excellent job describing the Middle Ages not only in the West, but also in parts of Africa, Asia, and the Middle East, comparing and contrasting various cultures, often in relation to religion. Using diverse examples such as the design and architecture of religious buildings and facets of faith-based persecution, the author sheds light on how Judaism, Christianity, and Islam shaped the lives of people in different parts of the world. In a thorough yet concise manner, Shapiro also explores significant developments of the time, such as trade along the Silk Road, Viking conquests, and the Crusades.

New Zealand illustrator Ross Kinnaird’s engaging cartoon style fits well with Shapiro’s frequently witty presentation of what might otherwise be dry historical facts. Incorporating tables, charts, and text bubbles, Kinnaird’s infographics distill complex information into easily digestible tidbits.

It’s a Feudal, Feudal World serves as a good introduction to the Middle Ages and a solid preliminary research tool (it includes an index along with a detailed glossary and bibliography). The infographic style is particularly accessible to those who struggle with reading.
