Jessica’s X-ray

by Pat Zonta, Clive Dobson, illus.

Jessica’s X-Ray provides a look at health care from the perspective of a child. After falling from a tree, young Jessica is taken to the hospital where a doctor orders an x-ray of her arm. The reader follows Jessica as she tours the initially frightening x-ray department and learns about the equipment. What starts off as a daunting tour turns into a mini-adventure. Author Pat Zonta has clearly drawn from her own experience as a pediatric x-ray technologist to make this narrative both realistic and educational.

Parents and kids alike will enjoy following Jessica as she explores the x-ray department. Her journey is brought to life in colourful illustrations. Youngsters are sure to be enthralled by the six large Mylar x-rays included in the book. In addition to bone x-rays, the book includes a CAT scan and an MRI of the head as well as an ultrasound of a baby in the womb.

The inclusion of an identification key at the end of the text is a brilliant addition that helps readers to identify what to look for in the actual images. Subtle findings that may be difficult for anyone (especially kids) to see are highlighted with arrows.

This title is a welcome addition to any public or school library. Busy pediatric emergency rooms and out-patient clinics would be wise to have this book in their waiting rooms.
