Muskoka II

by Judy Ross, with photos by John de Visser

Sometimes old adages are wrong and you can go back, and it isn’t so very different, and you are happy. Photographer John de Visser and writer Judy Ross published their successful Muskoka in 1989, capturing wonderfully evocative images of Ontario’s premier lake resort district: Muskoka’s moody lakescapes emerging from the still morning mists; children frolicking in the water; handsome boats; community gatherings. It was a book about dreams and traditions, about those long summers and the families and friends that filled them up.Well, nearly 10 years later, the two friends went back to Muskoka to check on the effects of the intervening decade. The result? Muskoka II and, as the French say, plus ça change, plus c’est la meme chose. The view from the deck is much the same, the air still healthy, the lake still clean, the sunrise over the water still thrilling. And in my corners of Muskoka, canoes still outnumber noisy boats. In a fast changing world, that’s almost more than anyone can ask for. And here are the pictures and the text to prove it.
