Night School

by Loris Lesynski

Night owl Eddie tries his mother’s patience with his aversion to bedtime, prompting him to search for a place where his insomnia is understood. He finds it at Night School and, accompanied by other local children, boards a special bus to attend classes distinctly different from his daytime ones. At Night School all things nocturnal are duly celebrated – Eddie studies the moon, owls, and lightbulbs, takes a miner’s lamp out to the darkened playground, and lunches on snacks from a night club. At first Eddie doesn’t notice the odd appearance of his new teachers, but sharp-eyed readers will recognize certain monsters roaming the school halls. As night wears on, inevitably the wide-awake Eddie faces increasing fatigue. But when he and the other new students are sent to the principal’s office just before dawn, Eddie must summon all his wits to escape the surprising turn of events.

Author/illustrator Lesynski’s fourth picture book deals with the familiar theme of a child discovering that sometimes having what you long for may lead to results you’d never imagined. Her light tone and rhyming text make this an easily digested lesson – readers will be caught up more in Eddie’s adventure than by any moral overtones. It is satisfying to see the Night School’s classrooms filled with night-themed books and other references to the dark hours. Lesynski’s illustrations are more cartoon than painting, and pages are at times overly crowded and busy, but momentum is maintained through the evenly scanning verses. Readers who identify with Eddie’s sleeplessness will enjoy his brief visit to Night School and the security of his safe return to his own bed.
