Room Enough for Daisy

by Debby Waldman and Rita Feutl; Cindy Revell, illus.

Celebrated children’s picture book team Debby Waldman and Cindy Revell have once again joined forces on a story inspired by Jewish folklore, co-authored this time by Edmonton children’s author Rita Feutl.

In this updated interpretation of the tale, Daisy believes her bedroom is much too small. When she stretches out her arms, her hands bump into toys cluttering the space. With her birthday just a few weeks away, how can Daisy make her room bigger in time to receive all the new presents? Enter Mom, carrying a big brown box, and offering a creative approach to solving Daisy’s dilemma.

Room Enough for Daisy can be used as a starting point for discussions with young children about important issues. Daisy’s messy room filled with colourful toys and her initial desire for a bigger space to accommodate her expanding collection speak to the privileges some children grow up with. Mom’s clever intervention is a wonderful aid for teaching the concept of “less is more.”

Waldman and Feutl imbue the story with a light tone, powerful message, and realistic characters. Revell’s illustrations, done in the same colourful, folk-art style as previous collaborations with Waldman (such as 2009’s Clever Rachel) are a treat for the eyes. Readers will enjoy returning to Daisy’s busy room and discovering details missed the first time around.
