Sasha and the Wind

by Rhea Tregebov, Hélène Desputeaux, illus.

Sasha loves the wind, and so do his friends, but after two fire alarms force Sasha’s class out into a blowing snowstorm, Sasha becomes frightened of the wind. He isn’t able to relax until he gets home from school. After a cup of hot chocolate with mom, Sasha is eager to play outside again.

This gentle story is sure to appeal to young children. Sasha’s mother is a source of comfort and safety, and the children help each other deal with their fears. The illustrations are rich and colourful, and complement the text perfectly. The pictures of the kids in the wind, with floating hats, leaves, and snowflakes, do a wonderful job of suggesting the power of the wind without making it seem threatening. Sasha and the Wind is a great story for a blustery day.
