The Ballet Book: The Young Performer’s Guide to Classical Dance

by Deborah Bowes and the National Ballet School, Lydia Pawelak, photog.

At age six, after I saw a performance of The Nutcracker, visions of pink crinoline tutus, sparkling tiaras, and satin ribbons danced through my head. I begged my mother to enroll me in ballet lessons. When she agreed, off I went. But much to my childish chagrin, the classes required far more hard work and discipline than I had ever imagined – I didn’t even get to wear the coveted pink tutu.

Which is why Deborah Bowes’ The Ballet Book is invaluable. A former dancer and National Ballet School teacher, Bowes, currently an examiner for prospective dance teachers, offers an extremely realistic and accurate look into the rigorous world of ballet.

After an introduction by retired prima ballerina Karen Kain, the book begins from a consumer standpoint and outlines what the novice should look for in a ballet school. Live musical piano accompaniment is preferable, and a sprung studio floor finished in wood, vinyl, or linoleum is optimal. Bowes outlines the qualifications a teacher ought to have and also discusses proper dance attire – particularly important since there’s nothing more embarrassing for a young child than showing up for the first class wearing sweats while everyone else is in a leotard.

More than 100 black-and-white captioned photos accompany the text, clearly illustrating the basic positions and progressing to more advanced moves such as pirouettes. Information on health and diet as well as performing rounds out the book, along with brief synopses and stills from staged classics such as Swan Lake. A useful glossary and an index are also included, making this an excellent guide for any young dancer, boy or girl.
