The Long Wait

by Budge Wilson, Eugenie Fernandes, illus.

The Long Wait is a heartwarming picture book based on a true story. Ten- year-old Deirdre was a black cat that belonged to the author and her family. Every year the Wilson family travelled from Ontario to Nova Scotia on holidays. One year, as Mr. Wilson was driving home, Deirdre escaped from her car cage in New Brunswick. So began a story of love and adventure, happiness and sadness all rolled into one.

Budge Wilson, author of many books for young people and the winner of numerous awards, uses several techniques that will appeal to her targeted age group. The initial pages of the book capture the reader by introducing a lovable pet. The interest level is maintained by including cliffhangers that lead to suspenseful and moving situations. The adventures of Deirdre and her newfound life in the wild are presented parallel to the emotional turmoil the Wilson family experiences at home without their beloved pet. This approach allows a good balance that enables children to appreciate both sides of the story. Parts of the book may bring tears to the eyes of young readers, but Wilson concludes the story on an extremely positive note.

The bright and colourful illustrations by veteran author/illustrator Eugenie Fernandes creatively enhance the story. Her portrayal of Deirdre, particularly the gold eyes and black coat with the three button-like white spots, is striking. Fernandes’ versatility is demonstrated in the varying perspectives of the illustrations, her landscapes, and the distinct facial expressions of the characters. Another noticeable feature is the inclusion of wildlife, and subtle seasonal and weather changes in the illustrations.

The Long Wait is an entertaining story that demonstrates to children that having a pet is a lasting and important commitment. This book will be a worthwhile investment with long-term appeal.
