The Screech Owls Scrapbook

by Roy MacGregor, Greg Banning, illus.

Ever since veteran hockey writer Roy MacGregor published his first book about a fictional team of young hockey players back in 1995, young readers have been following the exploits of the Screech Owls with fascination.

Until now, loyal readers of the Screech Owls books have had to keep track of the details of the lives of the main characters – how they perform on the ice, how they solve mysteries, and their personality quirks – in their heads as they read from book to book. The Screech Owls Scrapbook, though, pulls all the details together in what can best be described as a one-stop reference guide for fans of the series.

MacGregor has compiled everything a Screech Owls fan could ever want to know, from the top-10 stupidest purchases ever made by Wayne “Nish” Nishikawa to the personal stats of the team’s own Russian Rocket, Dmitri Yakushev, to details of the famous head-full-of-shaving-cream prank. The scrapbook will appeal to youngsters who have read at least a few of the Screech Owls novels and are able to put the information into context.

The books in the series regularly feature cover illustrations by Toronto artist Greg Banning, but this book is chock-full of Banning’s colour pictures throughout, which die-hard fans will love. Each player’s profile pages are well complemented by head-and-shoulder portraits, plus smaller illustrations designed to look like hockey cards and a “scouting report” that summarizes the player’s statistics.
