M&S to mark The Handmaid’s Tale’s 40th anniversary

McClelland & Stewart is releasing 40th anniversary editions of The Handmaid’s Tale this fall, one for independent Canadian bookstores (left) and another for Indigo (right).

In the 40 years since it was first published, Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale has been translated into more than 40 languages, sold more than eight million copies in English, and inspired an Emmy-winning television series.

To mark the book’s 40th anniversary, McClelland & Stewart – and its parent company, Penguin Random House – are kicking off a number of celebrations on Sept. 24 that include projecting images of handmaids onto landmarks around the world.

Images of handmaids will be projected onto Toronto City Hall from about 7:30 to 10 p.m. on Sept. 24. Handmaids will also be projected onto public libraries in Los Angeles, Los Vegas, and Chicago at the same local time, and in other countries, including the U.K., in a coordinated effort by Atwood’s global publishers.

Special anniversary editions of the book will be released later this fall – one for independent bookstores that features Fred Marcellino’s original cover art, and one for Indigo that features Noma Bar’s jacket illustration and a previously unpublished essay, “The Handmaid’s Tale Before and After,” that Atwood wrote in 1986.

Videos featuring contributions about the book’s enduring cultural resonance from Sir Salman Rushdie, Elisabeth Moss, Lauren Groff, Cheryl Strayed, and Samira Wiley, have also been created to mark its anniversary.

“Since the book was published in 1985, these issues have not gone away – in fact they are now more urgent than ever,” McClelland & Stewart said in a press release. “This is why the book has endured so powerfully. The Handmaid’s Tale explores a nightmarish future, but its roots are in modern-day political reality. As Margaret herself writes, ‘there’s nothing in it that we as a species have not done, aren’t doing now, or don’t have the technological capability to do.’”
