Canadian-authored, -published book sales up in 2025: BookNet report

Sales of English-language books by Canadians and books from Canadian-owned publishers in 2025 were up from the previous year, according to BookNet’s Canadian Book Market 2025 report.

The annual report, released last week by the book industry nonprofit, found that books by Canadians accounted for 14 per cent of print book sales in 2025 – up from 12 per cent in 2024. Books from Canadian-owned publishers accounted for 6.2 per cent of the market share in 2025 – up from 5.6 per cent in 2024. The numbers, though modest, are a heartening statistic for both Canadian creators and the Canadian publishing industry.

Overall, sales of print books in 2025 totalled $1.145 billion, up from $1.127 billion in 2024.

The report is based on BookNet Canada data from 3,091 store locations, which BookNet estimates accounts for 85 per cent of book industry sales for English-language print, trade books.

Books for younger readers continue to make up a large portion of sales, with two out of five books sold in both the English-language and French-language markets categorized as either juvenile or young adult titles for the eighth year in a row. Graphic novelist Dav Pilkey was the top-selling author in the English-language juvenile category for the sixth year in a row for the latest title in his Dog Man series, Dog Man: Big Jim Believes.

The complete report, available for purchase from BookNet, includes detailed breakdowns of book sales over more than 50 subject categories, as well as high-level consumer data from BookNet’s Canadian Book Consumer panel, and lending information from 85 public library systems.
