Griffin Poetry Prize to host town hall in May

The Griffin Poetry Prize will be hosting a town hall meeting later this month after asking for input on the prize’s format last month from the Canadian poetry community.

On April 2, just over three years after merging its Canadian and international categories into one annual poetry prize to create one of the richest poetry prizes in the world – which drew heavy criticism from some quarters for marginalizing Canadian poets, particularly in the last two years when no Canadians appeared on the shortlists, or even on the longlist in 2026 –  the Griffin announced it was seeking feedback on the nature of the prize.

A three-hour town hall meeting, which will take place both online and in-person in Toronto, is scheduled to take place on May 25. In announcing the date of the town hall, the Griffin said that it received 285 responses to the April request for feedback. A majority of respondents indicated an interest in participating in a meeting, with 126 saying they would like to attend online and 39 saying they would like to attend in person.

The meeting will be hosted by Scott Griffin and poet Ian Williams, trustees of the prize.
