Canadians Amal El-Mohtar and Elis Montgomery were among the winners at this year’s Hugo Awards.

The annual awards, administered by the World Science Fiction Society (WSFS), were announced at the World Science Fiction Convention (LAcon V) in Los Angeles, California, on August 31.

Ottawa-based El-Mohtar won the best novella category for The River Has Roots (Tordotcom). Vancouver-based Montgomery won the best poem category for “Hex Supply Customer Support Log” published in Strange Horizons (Issue 25 August 2025).

The awards are international fan-determined prizes for the best in speculative writing and work across 21 categories. The shortlists for the prizes were announced in April.
