Dead kitten imagery a tough sell for Helen Marshall’s Gifts for the One Who Comes After

3. I went back to the manuscript and reread some of the stories. There was one that I couldn’t shake from my head: a girl discovers a strange creature that looks like a dead kitten, and keeps it in a music box. My first attempt to use this image involved a straight-up dead kitten on a red velvet background. My daughter put it best: “It’s beautiful and sad. ’Cause the kitten is dead.”
