Carmella Gray-Cosgrove has been named the winner of the 2021 BMO Winterset Award, which celebrates excellence in Newfoundland and Labrador writing, for her debut story collection entitled Nowadays and Lonelier (Arsenal Pulp Press). The ceremony took place on March 17 at Government House in St. John’s.

The other shortlisted authors were Aimee Wall for We, Jane (Book*hug Press) and Claire Wilkshire for The Love Olympics (Breakwater Books). For the second consecutive year all three finalists were female – a first for the award.

Petrina Bromley, Eva Crocker, and Nelson White comprised the three-person jury.

The winner is awarded $12,500, and each finalist receives $3,000. Managed by ArtsNL, the BMO Winterset Award honours the memory of Sandra Fraser Gwyn.
