2023 Elizabeth Mrazik-Cleaver Canadian Picture Book Award finalists revealed

IBBY Canada has announced the finalists for the 2023 Elizabeth Mrazik-Cleaver Canadian Picture Book Award.

The award, which was established in 1985 following the death of illustrator and author Elizabeth Mrazik-Cleaver, is presented to a Canadian illustrator in recognition of outstanding artistic talent.

The finalists are:

  • Do You Remember?, illustrated and written by Sydney Smith (Groundwood Books)
  • Mnoomin maan’gowing / The Gift of Mnoomin, illustrated by Joshua Mangeshig Pawis-Steckley and written by Brittany Luby, Anishinaabemowin translation by Mary Ann Corbiere (Groundwood Books)
  • Once, a Bird, illustrated by Nathalie Dion and written by Rina Singh (Orca Book Publishers)
  • The Only Way to Make Bread, illustrated by Sarah Gonzales and written by Cristina Quintero (Tundra Books)
  • Skating Wild on an Inland Sea, illustrated by Todd Stewart and written by Jean E. Pendziwol (Groundwood Books)
  • The Song That Called Them Home, illustrated by Maya McKibbin and written by David A. Robertson (Tundra Books)
  • A Tulip in Winter: A Story About Folk Artist Maud Lewis, illustrated by Lauren Soloy and written by Kathy Stinson (Greystone Kids)
  • Le village dans la mer, illustrated and written by Félix Girard (Éditions de l’Isatis)
  • Waking Ben Doldrums, illustrated by Byron Eggenschwiler and written by Heather Smith (Orca Book Publishers)
  • We Love You as Much as the Fox Loves Its Tail, illustrated by Tamara Campeau and written by Masiana Kelly (Inhabit Media)

The winner will be unveiled on March 30 at the IBBY Canada annual meeting of members.
