Andre Alexis is one of three writers shortlisted for the 2026 Story Prize.
He is nominated for his 2025 collection Other Worlds, published in the U.S. by FSG Originals and in Canada by McClelland & Stewart.
The $20,000 (U.S.) prize is awarded annually for the best short-story collection published originally in English in the U.S the previous year. The two runners-up each receive $5,000 (U.S.).
The other 2026 finalists are American author Lydia Millet for her collection Atavists, published by W.W. Norton & Company, and Turkish writer Ayşegül Savaş for Long Distance, published by Bloomsbury Books.
The winner will be announced on March 31 in New York.
The Story Prize was established in 2004 by Julie Lindsey and Larry Dark, who choose the shortlist, and is underwritten by the The Chisholm Foundation, a Mississippi-based charitable organization. The judges for 2026 are copyeditor Benjamin Dreyer, previous winner Ling Ma, and librarian Stephen Sposato. One judge is always a short story writer; the second a critic, editor, or academic; and the third alternates between a bookseller and a librarian.
Previous winners of the prize include Edwidge Danticat, Tobias Wolff, George Saunders, Elizabeth Strout, Lauren Groff, and last year’s winner, Fiona McFarlane.
