Seven books have been longlisted for the 2024 BMO Winterset Award.
The annual award, now in its 25th year, celebrates Newfoundland and Labrador writers across all genres, granting a $12,500 prize to the winner. This year, to celebrate the award’s anniversary, two $12,500 prizes will be awarded: one to a work of fiction and one to a work of nonfiction. Two finalists will each be granted $3,000.
The award is administered by ArtsNL. This year, 30 entries were received.
The longlisted books are:
- A Seal of Salvage by Clayton B. Smith (Breakwater Books)
- Art of Camouflage by Sara Power (Freehand Books)
- I Forgive You by Scott Jones and Robert Chafe (Playwrights Canada Press)
- Invisible Prisons by Lisa Moore and Jack Whelan (Knopf Canada/Penguin Random House Canada)
- Otherwise Grossly Unremarkable by Ashleigh Matthews (Breakwater Books)
- The Weather Diviner by Elizabeth Murphy (Breakwater Books)
- Vigil by Susie Taylor (Breakwater Books)
The winners will be announced at an April 10 ceremony at Government House in St. John’s.
The award was established in 2000. Previous winners include Kathleen Winter, Megan Gail Coles, and last year’s winner, Holly Hogan.
