Books are a daily habit for 28 per cent of Canadian readers, new BookNet study reports

Most Canadian readers are reading daily, according to BookNet Canada’s annual Canadian Leisure and Reading Study. Twenty-eight per cent of self-identified readers said they read every day. That group is followed by readers who say they read once per week (26 per cent), more than once per day (13 per cent), once per month (12 per cent), a few times per year (11 per cent), and less than once per month (10 per cent).

Eight out of 10 Canadians identified as readers, a consistent finding over the past five years. Eighty-three per cent of readers bought a book at least once during the year and 63 per cent borrowed at least one book from a library. The largest group of readers reported getting most of their books from the library, with 27 per cent of print-book readers and 30 per cent of audiobook readers saying they get most of their books from the library.

When asked about the types of books that they had read, 44 per cent had read books that had been made into movies or television shows, followed by 30 per cent of readers who’d read books by or about Canadians. Canadians were least likely to have read books by or about the LGBTQ community, with only 7 per cent reporting they had read a book in this category.
