Toronto-based writer Miranda Schreiber is among the 10 writers longlisted for the 2025 Republic of Consciousness Prize.
Translator Padma Viswanathan, who is based in Arkansas but from British Columbia, is also among those longlisted for the annual prize that celebrates books from independent presses.
Schreiber was nominated for her debut novel Iris Among the Dead, published by Book*hug Press. Viswanathan translated Brazilian novelist Ana Paula Maia’s On Earth As It Is Beneath, published by Charco Press.
The Republic of Consciousness Prize, United States and Canada, now in its fourth year, celebrates literary merit in small-press books. The 10-book shortlist for the 2025 award was announced on Jan. 20. A five-book shortlist will be announced on Feb. 24.
A total of $35,000 (U.S.) will be awarded, with $2,000 going to each press of the 10 longlisted books. An additional $3,000 will be awarded to each shortlisted book, to be distributed equally among publisher and author or publisher, author, and translator. The prize is funded by donations from the public.
The jury for this year’s award is comprised of independent booksellers Lori Feathers, Ryan Farrell, Sarah Kalsbeek, Ian McCord, and Spencer Ruchti.
