Christina Sharpe, John Vaillant

Christina Sharpe and John Vaillant have been named finalists for the American National Book Awards.

Sharpe and Vaillant were both shortlisted for the nonfiction prize, and are among five finalists in that category.

Sharpe, Canada Research Chair in Black Studies in the Humanities at York University, was nominated for Ordinary Notes, published in the U.S. by Farrar, Straus and Giroux/Macmillan Publishers. Vaillant was nominated for Fire Weather, which was published in the U.S. by Knopf/Penguin Random House. Both are published in Canada by Knopf Canada.

The shortlists were announced on October 3.

The annual awards, administered by the nonprofit organization the National Book Foundation, aim to celebrate the best literature published each year in the United States and carry a $10,000 prize. Finalists each receive $1,000. In total, 25 books were shortlisted for this year’s awards over five categories: fiction, nonfiction, poetry, translated literature, and young people’s literature. The winners will be announced on November 15.
