Dionne Brand wins Trillium Book Award

Dionne Brand (Jason Chow)

Dionne Brand has won the 2019 Trillium Book Award for The Blue Clerk (McClelland & Stewart). The $20,000 prize rewards literary excellence by a writer from Ontario.

The Blue Clerk, a dialogue about writing between Brand and “the Blue Clerk,” who holds the poet’s unexpressed words, is the second book for which Brand has won the award. She also won in 1997 for her poetry collection Land to Light On.

The awards also honoured Lisa L’Hereux’s Et si un soir (Prise de parole) in the French Book category, Robin Richardson’s Sit How You Want (Signal Editions/Véhicule Press) in the English Poetry category, and Diya Lim’s La marchande, la sorcière, la lune et moi (Les Éditions L’Interligne) in the French Children’s Literature category. Each winner will receive $20,000.
