The Toronto Book Awards shortlist has been announced by the City of Toronto and Toronto Public Library.

The shortlist includes four novels, including a YA romance title, and one non-fiction crime and legal history.

• Cherry Beach by Don Gillmor (Biblioasis)
• Fatal Confession: A Girl’s Murder, a Man’s Execution, and the Fitton Case by Carolyn Strange (Osgoode Society for Canadian Legal History/UBC Press)
• Good Guys by Sharon Bala (McClelland & Stewart/Penguin Random House Canada)
• Property by Kate Cayley (Coach House Books) Review
• You Started It by Jackie Khalilieh (Tundra Books/Penguin Random House Canada)

The annual prize recognizes works of literary merit inspired by Toronto and its residents. The winner receives a prize of $20,000; the other shortlisted authors each receive $2,000.

The winner will be announced on Nov. 10 at a ceremony at the Toronto Reference Library.
