Hackmatack Children’s Choice Book Award winners announced

The winners of the 2022 Hackmatack Children’s Choice Book Award were announced in a virtual ceremony on June 3.

More than 1,000 children in grades 4 to 6 across the Atlantic region participated in the Hackmatack program by reading the shortlisted titles (20 French and 20 English) and voting for their favourite in each category.

The winners are:

English Nonfiction
Sergeant Billy: The True Story of the Goat Who Went to War, by Mireille Messier and Kass Reich, ill. (Tundra Books)

English Fiction
Screech! Ghost Stories from Old Newfoundland, by Charis Cotter and Genevieve Simms, ill. (Nimbus Publishing)

French Nonfiction
Cochon Dingue aime la terre, by Karine Lachapelle, Marijo Meunier, and Luc Michaud; Tristan Demers, ill. (La Bagnole)

French Fiction
Clochat veut ses 9 vies Tome 1: Tout va bien, by Cindy Roy and Yohann Morin, ill. (La Bagnole)

Though the author tour was predominantly virtual, Hackmatack was able to return to some in-person programming this year with shortlisted authors visiting local schools and libraries.
