House of Anansi Press announces restructuring

House of Anansi Press has announced a restructuring of the company, effective October 31, 2025.

The restructuring includes the formation of a new board of directors and a change in the management of House of Anansi and Groundwood Books.

The new five-member board will be comprised of owner and chairman Scott Griffin; Leanne Shapton, author and art director at The New York Review of Books; Flying Books bookseller and publisher (and former House of Anansi publisher from 1998 to 2005) Martha Sharpe; journalist, author, and publisher of Sutherland House Publishing, Kenneth Whyte; and David Young, author, playwright, and founding director of The Writers’ Trust of Canada.

As part of the restructuring, Semareh Al-Hillal will step down as the president of House of Anansi Press and Groundwood Books. Al-Hillal joined Groundwood Books as publisher in May 2018 and was named president of House of Anansi in 2020.

Karen Brochu, the publisher of House of Anansi, and Karen Li, the publisher of Groundwood Books, will assume responsibility for the operations of the respective publishing houses.
