Koyama leads nomination count for 2018 Doug Wright Awards

I’m Not Here, GG (Koyama Press)

Nominees have been announced for this year’s Doug Wright Awards, which celebrate talent in the Canadian comics industry. Toronto’s Koyama Press leads with the most nominations, followed by Montreal’s Drawn & Quarterly. Editorial cartoonist Duncan Macpherson (1924–1993), whose work appeared in the Montreal Standard, Toronto Star, and Maclean’s, is this year’s Giants of the North inductee.

The awards will be presented on May 12 at the Toronto Reference Library, during the Toronto Comic Arts Festival.

The Doug Wright Award, for best book:

  • Hostage, Guy Delisle (Drawn & Quarterly)
  • I’m Not Here, GG (Koyama Press)
  • Crawl Space, Jesse Jacobs (Koyama)
  • The Abominable Mr. Seabrook, Joe Ollmann (D&Q)
  • Anti-Gone, Connor Willumsen (Koyama)

The Doug Wright Spotlight Award, for a cartoonist deserving wider recognition:

  • Kris Bertin and Alexander Forbes, The Case of the Missing Men (Conundrum Press)
  • Gillian Blekkenhorst, All-Inclusive Fully Automated Vacation and House of Strays
  • Eric Kostiuk Williams, Condo Heartbreak Disco (Koyama)
  • Jason Loo, The Pitiful Human-Lizard, Nos. 12, 13, and 14 (Chapterhouse Comics)
  • Jenn Woodall, Magical Beatdown Vol. 2 and Marie and Worrywart

The Pigskin Peters Award, for best experimental, unconventional, or avant-garde comic:

  • The Dead Father, Sami Alwani
  • The Death of the Master, Patrick Kyle
  • Crohl’s House, Nos. 1 & 2, Alexander Laird, Jamiel Rahi, and Robert Laird
  • Creation: The First Three Chapters, Sylvia Nickerson
  • Potluck, Wavering Line Collective
