La courte échelle wins 2023 Bologna Prize

Quebec publisher La courte échelle has been named the North American winner of the 2023 Bologna Prize for the Best Children’s Publishers of the Year.

The prize is awarded annually to highlight excellent publishing houses from all over the world, with a winner is named for each region. Three of the five publishers shortlisted for the North American prize this year were Canadian. The winners were announced on March 6, the opening day of the Bologna Children’s Book Fair.

La courte échelle was started in 1978 by author Bertrand Gauthier and became the first Quebec publisher to focus on children’s books.

The win for the Montreal-based publisher marks the second year in a row that the North American winner at Bologna has been a Quebec press, after micro-press Monsieur Ed took home the prize last year.
