New kids’ book category introduced for the 2020 Doug Wright Awards

The 2020 Doug Wright Awards, honouring the best Canadian comics and graphic novels, has introduced a category for best book for kids aged 12 and under. The Egghead is named after Canadian cartoonist Doug Wright’s original name for his signature character Nipper, the star of the Doug Wright’s Family cartoon series.

Submissions are now open in all four categories: the Doug Wright Award, for best Canadian graphic book; the Nipper, for emerging talent; the Pigskin Peters, for small or micropresses; and the Egghead. All Canadian English-language titles that count illustration as an integral component and were published between Jan. 1, 2019 and Dec. 31, 2019 are eligible. The deadline is Jan. 24.

For the first time, submissions will be accepted either online or by mail. A $15 entrance fee will be charged for the Doug Wright and Egghead awards. All entrees will be judged by a three-member jury, with winners announced during the Toronto Comic Arts Festival, to be held May 9 and 10.
