Toronto’s Owlkids Books has been shortlisted for this year’s Bologna Prize for the Best Children’s Publishers of the Year. The awards are given to publishers representing six international regions, as selected by publishing houses, associations, and other books institutions.
This is Owlkids’ first nomination since the prize was established six years ago. “We’re thrilled to be recognized in this way, especially on the international stage,” says Karen Boersma, publisher of Owlkids Books. “We have been working hard to bring our authors’ and illustrators’ books to a worldwide audience, and to bring the best international books to North American readers, and it’s gratifying to see our efforts acknowledged.”
Also nominated for this award in the North America category are Toronto’s Annick Press and Editions D’eux from Sherbrooke, Quebec.
Canadian publishers have traditionally done well with this award, which is considered one of the most prestigious in international children’s publishing. Last year, Kids Can Press was named North American publisher of the year. In 2016, that title was presented to Groundwood Books.
The winner will be announced at the Bologna Children’s Book Fair, which runs from March 26–29.
