People’s Co-op Bookstore launches urgent fundraising campaign ahead of 75th anniversary

The People’s Co-op Bookstore in Vancouver is urgently looking to raise funds ahead of its 75th anniversary in June.

The member-run indie store, which was opened in 1945 by a coalition of social, political, and labour activists, is hoping to raise “75 for 75,” or $75,000 towards the next 75 years. The funds would help ensure the bookstore’s short-term survival and provide some long-term improvements, including a new website, physical upgrades, and an expanded inventory.

Co-op board chair Laurel McBride says in a statement: “The store was struggling to survive even before the COVID-19 crisis hit. Sales had been improving, but not enough to cover monthly expenses. Then the pandemic hit, forcing us shut. Now we really need your help.”

Donations can be made to the store’s GoFundMe campaign until June 27.
