Phyllis Bruce to receive 2017 Ivy Award

Phyllis_BruceSimon & Schuster Canada editor Phyllis Bruce has been named this year’s Ivy Award recipient. The prize, which honours individuals who have made substantial contributions to Canadian publishing, is administered by the International Visitors Programme, an annual cultural exchange between Canadian and foreign publishing professionals that takes place during the International Festival of Authors.

Bruce was named editor of the S&S Canada imprint Phyllis Bruce Editions in August 2013. She previously served as publisher of Phyllis Bruce Books at HarperCollins Canada and editor-in-chief at Key Porter Books. Bruce, a two-time recipient of the Canadian Booksellers’ Association’s Editor of the Year Award, has published many notable Canadian authors, including David Bergen, Dennis Bock, Charlotte Gray, Helen Humphreys, Frances Itani, Dianne Warren, and Richard B. Wright. In 2015, she was appointed a Member of the Order of Canada for her service to the industry.

Bruce was selected by a jury comprising Alison Jones (publisher, Quill & Quire), Linda McKnight (director and vice-president, Westwood Creative Artists), and Geoffrey E. Taylor (director, IFOA). She will be presented the award onstage by S&S Canada author Ann Y.K. Choi on Oct. 23 prior to the IV Keynote address by Jeremy Trevathan, publisher of Pan Macmillan in the U.K.
