Publishers, editors, and writers named to the Order of Canada

Governor General Mary Simon announced the 2023 appointments to the Order of Canada on December 28, 2023. Several publishers, editors, and writers were among the 78 individuals honoured.

The Order of Canada recognizes people across all sectors of society who have made extraordinary and sustained contributions to the country.

Appointed as an Officer of the Order of Canada, is Montréal-based Innu poet, translator, and documentary film maker Joséphine Bacon.

Nurjehan Aziz Vassanji, editor and publisher of Toronto-based Mawenzi House, was among those named as a member of the Order of Canada. She was the recipient of the 2020 Ivy Award.

Also appointed as members were editor and publisher Patrick Crean, the former publisher of Patrick Crean Editions at HarperCollins Canada (2014–2022), and previously publisher at Thomas Allen Publishers, and journalist and founder and executive director of the Art Canada Institute Sara Angel.

Bronwyn Drainie, radio host and editor-in-chief of the Literary Review of Canada from 2003 to 2015, journalist and author André Picard, and Governor General’s Award–winning author Kim Thúy Ly Thanh were named as members to the Order as well.

The investiture of the appointees will be held at a yet-to-be announced ceremony in 2024.
