In less than a week, an open letter of support for trans and non-binary communities has been signed by more than 1,300 publishing professionals in Canada and the U.S., including high-profile authors such as Roxane Gay, Lauren Groff, Celeste Ng, and Neil Gaiman. The letter is a companion to one signed last week by U.K. publishers.
The introduction says in part:
We are writers, editors, journalists, agents, and professionals in multiple forms of publishing. We believe in the power of words. We want to do our part to help shape the curve of history toward justice and fairness.
To that end, we say: non-binary people are non-binary, trans women are women, trans men are men, trans rights are human rights.
Your pronouns matter.
You matter.
You are loved.
Among the Canadian signatories to date are employees of Penguin Random House Canada and Scholastic Canada, as well as authors Hiromi Goto, Jen Gunter, and David A. Robertson.
