Q&Q named honorary lifetime member of ACP; Hamish Cameron receives ACP President’s Award

Q&Q was grateful to receive an honorary lifetime membership in the Association of Canadian Publishers on June 22. The honour, presented to “an individual or group who is not a member of ACP, but has made a significant contribution to the association and to the Canadian publishing industry,” was made as part of the 2021 ACP awards’ announcement.

Quill & Quire has long provided an inestimable service to the Canadian publishing industry,” said ACP executive director Kate Edwards in a statement. “ACP is delighted to recognize their many contributions to Canada’s rich book culture, and their continued championing of Canadian writing and publishing.”

The magazine launched in 1935 primarily as an office supplies and stationary publication, shifting its focus to books and Canadian publishing over the decades. Today it provides book industry updates, reports on publishing news, spotlights notable books and authors, and publishes reviews of Canadian books.

The ACP also announced that its President’s Award will go to Hamish Cameron, vice-president, distribution at the University of Toronto Press. The award is presented to an ACP member who has made a significant contribution to the Canadian publishing industry and to the ACP. Cameron, who has worked with UTP for 31 years, will retire at the end of the month.

“Hamish has been instrumental in providing information, ideas, and guidance to the benefit of not only client publishers in UTP’s warehouse, but the Canadian-owned publishing sector as a whole,” ACP president Melissa Pitts said in a statement. “There are very few people as knowledgeable as Hamish about how the book chain in Canada works. … [he] is a brilliant thinker and problem solver, generous in sharing his insights and suggestions – all presented with goodwill and an indelibly wry humour.”

The ACP announced it would formally present these awards “at the earliest opportunity.”
