Robert Amos wins 2023 Basil Stuart-Stubbs Prize

Robert Amos

Victoria writer and artist Robert Amos has been awarded the 2023 Basil-Stuart Stubbs Prize for Outstanding Scholarly Book on British Columbia.

Amos won the $3,500 prize for his 2022 book E. J. Hughes: Canadian War Artist (Touchwood Editions), his fifth book about the B.C. painter.

The Basil Stuart-Stubbs Prize is awarded annually by the UBC Library and the Pacific BookWorld News Society. It was established in 2012 in memory of Basil Stuart-Stubbs, who served as the university librarian at UBC and as director of the university’s School of Library, Archival and Information Studies.

“Amos’s book deepens our appreciation for Hughes’ craft and enriches our understanding of Hughes’ vision during a critical time in history,” Dr. Susan E. Parker, UBC’s university librarian, said in a release.

Amos has been working on telling the story of Hughes’s life and work in a series of books, with the sixth (E. J. Hughes: Life at the Lake) forthcoming from Touchwood in the fall.
