Sarah Polley to publish personal-essay collection with Hamish Hamilton

Actor and director Sarah Polley will publish her first book in March 2022 as part of a two-book deal with Hamish Hamilton Canada. Run Towards the Danger tells five stories through personal essays.

Nicole Winstanley, publisher of Hamish Hamilton/Penguin Canada, will edit. “It is perhaps Sarah’s most potent example of what it means to bring ourselves to a story, to project our own history and experience onto it in such a way that affects not only how we remember it, but also how we tell it to others,” Winstanley said in a statement. No details about the second book have been announced.

The deal was arranged by Sarah Chalfant at The Wylie Agency. Run Towards the Danger will be published by Penguin Press in the U.S.

Polley was nominated for a screenwriting Oscar for her 2006 directorial debut Away From Her, adapted from Alice Munro’s short story “The Bear Came Over the Mountain.” Her next project is an adaptation of Miriam Toews’s 2018 novel Women Talking starring Frances McDormand.
