Susin Nielsen, Kenneth Oppel, and Isabelle Arsenault nominated for 2020 Carnegie and Kate Greenaway Medals

Isabelle Arsenault (Cindy Boyce)

Canadian authors Susin Nielsen and Kenneth Oppel and Canadian illustrator Isabelle Arsenault have been longlisted for this year’s Carnegie and Kate Greenaway Medals. The winners of the prize for the best children’s writing and illustration, presented by the U.K. librarian association CILIP, will be announced on June 17.

The 20 longlisted titles for the Carnegie Medal, recognizing children’s writing, includes Vancouver writer Nielsen’s No Fixed Address (Tundra Books), a middle-grade novel about homelessness, and Vancouver Island author Kenneth Oppel’s Inkling (HarperCollins), a middle-grade novel about a sentient inkblot, illustrated by Sydney Smith. Smith won the Kate Greenaway Medal in 2018.

Among the 20 longlisted titles for the Kate Greenaway Medal, recognizing illustration in children’s books, is Captain Rosalie (Penguin Random House), illustrated by Montreal’s Isabelle Arsenault. The middle-grade historical picture book, written by Timothée de Fombelle and translated by Sam Gordon, is about a five-year-old girl whose father is away at war. Vancouver author Linda Bailey’s Mary Who Wrote Frankenstein, about Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley, was also longlisted for its illustrations by Júlia Sardà.

The winners of each prize, voted on by U.K. children’s librarians, will receive £5,000 and an additional £500 worth of books to donate to their local library. The entire longlist can be found on the CILIP website.
