Five books have been nominated for the Writers’ Trust Shaughnessy Cohen Prize for Political Writing.
The annual prize, now in its 25th year, recognizes literary nonfiction about a political subject that is relevant to Canadian readers.
A jury comprised of journalists Jennifer Ditchburn, Sara Mojtehedzadeh, and Christopher Waddell chose the finalists from the 34 books submitted by 22 publishing imprints.
The finalists are:
- Canada’s Prime Ministers and the Shaping of a National Identity by Raymond B. Blake (On Point Press/UBC Press)
- The Prince: The Turbulent Reign of Justin Trudeau by Stephen Maher (Simon & Schuster Canada)
- Health for All: A Doctor’s Prescription for a Healthier Canada by Jane Philpott (Signal/Penguin Random House Canada)
- The Adaptable Country: How Canada Can Survive the Twenty-First Century by Alasdair Roberts (McGill-Queen’s University Press)
- The Knowing by Tanya Talaga (HarperCollins)
The winner will be announced in Ottawa on Sept. 24 at the annual Politics and the Pen gala.
