2024 Griffin Poetry Prize longlist announced

The Griffin Poetry Prize has announced a longlist of 10 titles for the 2024 prize.

The two Canadians on the list are translators George McWhirter and Emilie Moorhouse.

The longlisted titles are:

  • A Crash Course in Molotov Cocktails by Amelia M. Glaser (USA) and Yuliya Ilchuk (Ukraine), translated from the Ukrainian written by Halyna Kruk, (Ukraine), published by Arrowsmith Press
  • To 2040 by Jorie Graham (USA), published by Copper Canyon Press
  • School of Instructions by Ishion Hutchinson (Jamaica), published by Faber & Faber, and Farrar, Straus & Giroux
  • Door by Ann Lauterbach (USA), published by Penguin Books
  • The Lights by Ben Lerner (USA), published by Farrar, Straus & Giroux, and Granta Poetry
  • Self-Portrait in the Zone of Silence by George McWhirter (Northern Ireland/Canada), translated from the Spanish written by Homero Aridjis (Mexico), published by New Directions Publishing
  • Emerald Wounds: Selected Poems of Joyce Mansour by Emilie Moorhouse (Canada), translated from the French written by Joyce Mansour (France), published by City Lights Books
  • perennial fashion presence falling by Fred Moten (USA), published by Wave Books
  • To the Letter by Mira Rosenthal (USA), translated from the Polish written by Tomasz Różycki (Poland), published by Archipelago Books
  • And And And by Cole Swensen (USA), published by Shearsman Books

The longlist was selected by judges Albert F. Moritz (Canada), Jan Wagner (Germany), and Anne Waldman (USA). They read 592 books of poetry, including 49 translations from 22 languages, submitted by 235 publishers from 14 different countries.

The shortlist of five books will be announced on Wednesday, April 17, 2024.

The winner  of the $130,000 prize will be announced at the Griffin Poetry Prize Readings at Koerner Hall in Toronto on Wednesday, June 5. The other shortlisted finalists will each receive $10,000.
