Tim Cook and Jean Van Loon among winners of 2023 Ottawa Book Awards

The 2023 Ottawa Book Awards, in both English and French categories, were announced on October 11.

The English-language winners are Jean Van Loon, Nuclear Family (McGill-Queen’s University Press) for English fiction/poetry and Tim Cook, Lifesavers and Body Snatchers: Medical Care and the Struggle for Survival in the Great War (Penguin Canada) for nonfiction.

As well, Conyer Clayton’s But the sun, and the ships, and the fish, and the waves (Anvil Press) was announced as the winner of the Archibald Lampman Award for Poetry.

In the French language categories, the fiction award went to Nancy Vickers, Capharnaüm (Les Editions David); the nonfiction prize went to Maurice Henrie’s essay collection, La tête haute (University of Ottawa Press); and Alexis Rodrigue‑Lafleur’s Rêve‑Creux (Les Éditions L’Interligne) received the Prix Littéraire Émergence AAOF .

The fiction and nonfiction winners each receive $7,500, while finalists receive $1,000.

The shortlists were announced in September.
