After more than two decades at its current location, Toronto’s oldest children’s bookstore, Mabel’s Fables, is moving. And help to cover the moving and renovating costs, the bookstore has launched a GoFundMe.
The store is set move two blocks south of its current location at the end of this summer. Mabel’s Fables Bookstore opened at 662 Mount Pleasant Road in September 1988, and their longtime home will be demolished as part of a new housing project in the neighbourhood. The store says their landlord told them of the news in late 2024.
Though a new location has been secured, Mabel’s Fables needs to raise money to cover the cost of renovating the new space and the move itself – expenses the independent bookstore simply cannot recover on its own. The bookstore has launched a $150,000 GoFundMe campaign entitled “Next Chapter Fund” to ask supporters to help fund the move.
The current location will close its doors permanently on August 23, 2025.
