The winners of the 2025 Ruth and Sylvia Schwartz Children’s Book Awards were revealed on June 13. Each of the winners receives $6,000 for “artistic excellence in writing and illustration in English-language Canadian children’s literature.”
Two juries comprised of young readers from Birch Cliff Heights Public School in Scarborough selected the winners.
The winner in the children’s picture book category was The Little Regent by Yewande Daniel-Ayoade and Ken Daley, ill. (Owlkids Books).
“Abioye is an excellent role model for kids and adults – she made her kingdom WAY happier,” said the student jurors in the press release. “Being a ruler is not an everyday thing, but helping others in the community is.”
In the young adult/middle reader category the winner was The New Girl: A Graphic Novel by Cassandra Calin (Scholastic Canada).
“We definitely recommend this book and want to read more from this author!,” said the student jurors. “This story is realistic and relatable, with really great lessons about making and keeping friends in a new country and culture. Lia’s struggles with self-doubt make her character and the story come to life.”
The winners were chosen from shortlists announced earlier in May.
The Ontario Arts Foundation, with the support of the Ontario Arts Council, administers the awards.
