Six writers have been named the next writers in residence at Pierre Berton House in Dawson City, Yukon.
The residency program, administered by the Writers’ Trust of Canada, offers writers a two-month stay in Pierre Berton’s childhood home, along with a $4,000 stipend.
Poet Jesse Keith Butler, author and literary agent Cody Caetano, novelist and essayist Krista Foss, writer Helen Knott, journalist and multigenre writer Angela Long, and poet and children’s author Rebecca Thomas have been named the next six writers who will occupy the post. The residencies are scheduled to begin in July 2025 and end in October 2026.
The selected writers were chosen by a jury comprised of artist Darcy Tara McDiarmid, and past writers-in-residence Eliza Robertson and Paul Seesequasis.
The program relaunched in 2022 after pausing for the pandemic and then for renovations.
In announcing the latest recipients, the Writers’ Trust also announced a new investment to the program. The Lind Family Foundation is granting the organization $10,000 a year for five years (for a total of $50,000) to the program.
“Our family’s deep roots in the Klondike have made the Yukon a special focus of our philanthropic efforts,” Sarah Lind, co-director of the Lind Family Foundation along with her brother, Jed Lind, said in a press release. “We’re proud to support Berton House Writers’ Residencies and to help create opportunities that connect writers with the North’s rich culture, history, and landscape—experiences we hope will be reflected in their work and contribute to enriching Canada’s identity.”
Berton House has operated as a writers’ residency since 1996, and has been owned and operated by the Writers’ Trust, which Berton himself co-founded, since 2007. Nearly 100 writers have spent time there as writers in residence.
