Writers’ Union of Canada hires Doyali Islam as new editor of Write magazine

by

Award-winning Toronto poet Doyali Islam has been hired as the new editor of Write, the Writers’ Union of Canada’s quarterly members publication. Islam also serves as poetry editor at Arc Poetry Magazine.

Islam replaces former editor Hal Niedzviecki, who resigned May 10 following a controversial editorial calling for a “cultural appropriation prize” in an issue dedicated to Indigenous writers. Subsequently, TWUC’s national council announced plans to review the publication’s editorial process to include a sensitivity review of each issue.
